The Waiter
I stood there shivering in the light drizzle which now began to fall on the small crowd of about fifty people who had gathered this evening to see my friend Amy and her long time boy friend Rob finally tie the knot. I still couldn’t believe they were actually getting married. It was almost eight years ago to the day that they met but I remember it like it was yesterday, because I was there. We had decided to study abroad together that year in Israel, taking classes at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Amy and I were eating lunch together at Burger’s Bar in Jerusalem that day and our waiter was none other than a nice young boy from California. After hearing us speaking in English he politely asked us where we were from in America and what we were doing there. He told us he had come to Israel for the year to do
volunteer work and was now working as a waiter to make enough money to travel around for a few months. After we finished he came over to Amy and asked her out. They’ve been together ever since.
The Wedding
My mind wandered back to the wedding taking place in front of me. As Amy’s best friend I was up on stage with the families and as such had a front row view of the proceedings. Her parents beamed with happiness for their daughter.
Amy looked like a queen in her long flowing wedding dress with her wavy brown hair flowing over the top of it. I had gone shopping with her two days ago for the dress and she had tried on about seven dresses before we had both agreed that this was the one. I even tried it on myself just for fun and I couldn’t help but imagine the day when I would where one myself. They smiled at each other and the warmth of their love seemed to fill the entire area.
A Mystical Moment
The rain had continued off and on. When Rob finally went to take out the
diamond rings which he had bought for the occasion the combination of the misty rain and the lights which surrounded the stage seemed to make it sparkle and shine, radiating its splendor to all who surrounded the stage.
It was a mystical moment. The crowd waited with bated breath as he slowly moved the ring onto her finger. When it was on her finger Amy held it up high for all to see. The light of the diamond beamed outwards and a hush fell over the crowd. Eventually the ceremony came to an end and everyone came up the bride and groom to wish them congratulations.
I mostly stepped to the side and waited for my opportunity. I came up to Amy and she smiled at me warmly. We exchanged a long, warm hug and then her and Rob were off to the frenzy of the crowd as they made their way down the hallway.
